The Likir monastery stand 6 km north of the main Leh -Srinagar highway, a little before the village of Saspol. From Leh itself, the distance is 62 km in the western direction. It was during the rule of the fifth king of Ladakh, LhachenGyalpo, that land was offered to Lama DuwangChosje, an eminent advocate of meditation, to construct themonastery. The lama graced the land and the monastery came up in 1065 AD. The monastery was enclosed by the bodies of the two great serpent spirits or the naga- rajas, Nanda and Taksako. Because of this, the name of the monastery became Likir or the Naga encircled. Initially, the monastery was associated with the Kadampa sect, however, the year 1470 saw a conversion by a central Tibetan monk LawangLotos. This coversion resulted in the monastery being brought under the Gelukspa Order of the great Lama Tsongkhapa. Alchi Believed to be built between the 10th and 11th century amongst the oldest monastery in the Ladakh region, the Alchi Monastery is more of a monastic complex of temples in Alchi village that brings out the colours of four different ancient settlements. The Alchi complex maintains the three-storied temple, which is the main temple, an assembly hall, another temple that is also known as Manjushri and Chortens. The temple walls hold a diorama of several Buddhist and Hindu kings that exude a unique artistic style. Further, within the complex there are several statues of Lord Buddha and borque-style wood carvings and other art works. The Alchi Monastery is approximately 65 kilometers away from Leh, which is accessible by air from New Delhi, Jammu and Srinagar and by road from Srinagar in Kashmir and Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

Here they invariable halted for a few days to make final preparations for getting over the mountains, or to recuperate afterwards. There would be no supplies, not even grazing for the animals, for about 12 days after Panamik, so they had to carry all their provisions for that time.
